What is Japji Sahib?
Japji Sahib is the foundational prayer of Sikhism, composed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru. It appears at the beginning of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism, and serves as the morning prayer for Sikhs worldwide.
The word “Japji” comes from “Jap” meaning “to recite” or “to meditate upon,” and “Sahib” is a term of respect. Together, Japji Sahib means “the revered recitation” or “the honorable meditation.”
Consisting of 38 verses (pauris) plus the Mool Mantar and Slok, Japji Sahib encapsulates the core philosophy of Sikhism and provides a comprehensive guide to spiritual living.
